INTERMAG General Assembly

Stockholm

September 18 - 19, 2015

Draft Minutes

Friday, September 18, 2015                                      Start: 14.00 / End: ±17.00

1. Opening of the General Assembly

Gerhard Losher (BR) welcomed the attendants and especially Mette Nordström from YLE. She is the successor of Stefan Winiger at YLE/TV-Nytt and attended the first time,

2. Approval of the ”Proposed Minutes”

The Minutes of the General Assembly September 26-27, 2014 in Brussels were approved.

3. Interested Programmes

Colleagues from DR and NRK were in Stockholm for a meeting amongst Scandinavian broadcasters where they discussed on exchanging more foreign affairs reports since now mainly domestic themes are shared. Unfortunately they had to leave earlier. Mette Nordström points out that one of DR's programmes is "Madmagasinet" a consumer oriented food show. It would be a good partner for Euromaxx.

The Finnish and Swedish department of YLE don't really have shows dealing with foreign affairs. It's all about domestic current affairs which nevertheless could be interesting for other INTERMAG members. The Swedish speaking news show TV-Nytt broadcasts items of 1'30 to 5'00 many of which on the Baltic States and Russia. Another interesting Swedish show is "Närbild" on the coastal area's.

4. Exchange

There seems to be a misinterpretation of the statutes that INTERMAG reports can be used as footage in newly produced reports. This is incorrect. If reports have to be shortened dramatically it should be done after consulting the offering member.

Dagmar Michel/DW more specifically told us that actually DW makes agreements with production companies where it is stated that no more than 1/4 of the report can be changed or cut. If this is not possible the report should be eighter purchased or the author should be contacted.

Still it cannot be allowed that any change or cut alters the message of the report.

Furthermore the idea of not having to buy rights if a report is exchanged is not entirely correct. Gerhard Losher/BR states that if the worldwide rights are acquired there shouldn't be a problem. But even in case of worldwide rights for ARD other stations have to get the rights again for scenes or images the ARD had to pay license fees for.

The question was asked whether it is possible to exchange footage from the archives. That would be a personal choice of the consulted member and could be an interesting side effect of INTERMAG membership.

It was suggested to also include planned shoots in the offerings.

5. Election presidency

Gerhard Loser already announced last year that he wouldn't step up as president again in 2015. He sticks with that decision especially since now there was some bad news from the BR board. In order to cut down costs there are plans to turn Euroblick into a best off show of ARD reports from different current affairs programmes. Furthermore the news director is only interested in news instead of human interest and wants to focus more on domestic issues. This of course would also jeopardize Euroblick's INTERMAG membership.

Gerhard gives a short historic overview of INTERMAG  and points out that after some difficult years where a lot has been done to enhance our organisation INTERMAG practically runs itself at the moment and evolved into a small but reliable club.

Ingrid Thörnqvist was nominated for election by several members and accepted to step up. She was unanimously voted. Her main task would be networking. She proposes to choose a new president every year who also takes over the organization of the next meeting.

Since Ingrid becomes the new president there was a vacancy for Vice-President. Erin Rostad was asked and agreed to do the job till next meeting. Kathrin Lemke stays on as the first vice-president and thus INTERMAG is in capable female hands.

6. Future of INTERMAG

As it was announced last year the Brussels office of Deutsche Welle hosts the Coordination Centre until the end of 2015. After that a new home base has to be found.

The solution would be to split up the responsibilities of the CC.
Allan Tammik of SVT would become the new coordinator. The CC takes care of the organization and administration of the meeting, communication with the members, filing the offerings and supervising the address list.

The accounting will be dealt with by Deutsche Welle. Dagmar Michel/DW-Fokus Europa kindly offers to take care of the invoices (according to the member list delivered by the CC) and to manage the funds of INTERMAG for 2 years (from 01.01.2016 till 31.12.2017). After that period another member should step up to take over. The fee continues to be 500,00 €. Paying shows commitment and makes INTERMAG independent and autonomous. INTERMAG can choose the venue for the meeting and pay all expenses. Fokus Europa would be exempt from the yearly fee. Also a reward of 1000 € is appropriated to the coordinator.

The Website will remain with Deutsche Welle. If changes have to be made the CC can still rely on Gerd Lemmens to pass on the info to the IT department.

8. Next Meeting
